artist's statement

as a photographer with a fine art passion, I reject all theories on the appropriate distinctions between photography and fine art. I reject the tyranny of tools being inextricably tied to objectives, that is, that photography can only portray the "what is", while paint is free to explore "what can be".

therefore,
I work to combine a paint sensibility with photographic techniques. as such, there is attention to surface, palette and composition as well as a focus on light, shadow and technique. in each picture I struggle to preserve the veracity of photography while reaching for the power of paint.

that said, I think it is critical for the viewer to accept that this image is plausible. when that happens, I believe, for a brief moment I can share a synchronicity of feeling and thought with my audience. I consciously work with that feature of photography, the suspension of disbelief, to invite viewers into my world of patterns, perspectives, intrusions, occlusions and tangles. for me, it is a bewildering world of passion and wonder, anxiety and philosophy. making art is my opportunity to write some of this stuff down.
